Apple has added eGPU support to macOS so just about every Mac can be turned into a VR-ready machine, and releasing more capable machines like the iMac Pro to handle it natively.

Windows Mixed Reality only supports Windows, Oculus Rift started to support the Mac years ago and then abruptly stopped, and it's taken a long time for things to change.īut Apple and Valve and HTC have been working together to fix this. VR Headsets don't really support the Mac much right nowįeeding into the false narrative that most Mac users aren't gamers, there isn't a lot of great VR support for macOS. Display resolution in the headset could be better. It's as good as I have heard from a laptop.or desktop for that matter. If I am away from home, I am happy to listen to audio from the MacBook Pro DAC. Another part is the power the Lyr 2 affords the headphones. The difference in timbre resolution is astounding! Part of this is the multibit DAC. The sound is fuller, more detailed, smoother, with better soundstage and separation. But it just pales in comparison to the second setup. Schiit Modi Multibit DAC using Audirvana 2.6.6 (direct, integer, and system hog modes) with my Sennheiser HD 650 headphones plugged into a Schiit Lyr 2 with Siemens CCa tubes. Built-in DAC using Audirvana 2.6.6 (direct, integer, and system hog modes) with my Sennheiser HD 650 headphones plugged into the MacBook audio port.Ģ. I think our issue may be a matter of perspective. I have a late 2016 15" MacBook Pro Touch Bar with 2.9 GHz i7, 16GB RAM, Radeon Pro 460 with 4GB VRAM, and a 1TB SSD. I have tested this set-up against iTunes 16/44 output and it's much better than the stock iTunes solution.

I used 24/96 FLAC files as a source played by V2.6 of Audirvana Plus set in the direct, interger and system hog modes. Mine is a 15" with Touch Strip, 2.7GHz Core 7, and 16Gb memory. Maybe different models have different chips. Has anybody reported what DAC chip is used In the new MacBook Pros? I think I read it's a Cirrus Logic chip.

There's a chance this conversation might be helpful in identifying how to get the most out of a ho-hum laptop output.Įven our machines might be different. What I mean is that neither of us described our set-ups in detail and that could be making a difference.
We could be comparing apples and oranges rather than Apples to Apples. Then I got to thinking that there could be more to our difference in perception than just our own preferences. By and large I agree that if you wan't audiophile sound a laptop isn't going to provide it. Our difference of views may arise completely from the fact that you have higher standards than I do. This doesn't sound like an option for you based on what you reported. Now at least it's quite listenable I have used it on short trips (flights) so that I didn't have to drag along additional gear. I always used an external DAC/Amp in the past on Apple laptops. Their past offerings weren't as bad as some PCs but they were nothing special. To my ears at least, Apple did much better on the new laptop than they have in the past. It isn't easy to wedge a high quality DAC and amp in a laptop and the power costs are considerable as well-but as noted above by you and others, some makers have done better than others with their audio output. I totally agree the external DAC solution sounds better, as it should in large part for the reason you cited. I think we've both misinterpreted one another. We hear what we hear and call it as we see it. I never questioned whether yours was an honest review.
